Inland Skipper Course

The Inland Skipper certificate is designed for those who want to operate boats on inland waters for recreation. It covers essential skills such as manoeuvring, docking and navigating rivers, lakes and canals. This certification ensures the safe and confident operation of powerboats in a variety of inland water conditions.

Your Opportunities After the Course

This course allows you to charter a yacht up to 15 meters in length anywhere in the world and navigate lakes, rivers, and other inland waterways during daylight hours — within 2 nautical miles of a sheltered port and in weather conditions not exceeding Force 6 on the Beaufort scale.

Course Requirements

  • Required previous certification: None.
  • Age: 16 - 99 years.
  • A stable internet connection and basic technical equipment required for video calls.
  • Fill out the student questionnaire before the start of the course.
  • Payment at least 2 weeks before the course to ensure timely provision of visual materials, which will be sent by Post.

Yacht Structure and Basic Systems

  • Understanding the main parts of a yacht and their purpose
  • Using the yacht’s internal systems
  • Operating the engine
  • Refueling water and diesel tanks

Line Handling and Mooring

  • Tying basic nautical knots
  • Handling mooring lines
  • Working with fenders

Sail Handling

  • Hoisting, lowering, reefing, and adjusting sails
  • Operating sheets and halyards

Anchoring and Dinghy Use

  • Preparing and using the anchor; operating the windlass
  • Handling and securing the dinghy

Onboard Safety

  • Moving safely around the deck; using safety equipment
  • Emergency signals (pyrotechnics, mirrors, flags, etc.)
  • Firefighting equipment
  • MOB (Man Overboard) procedures

Yacht Handling

  • Maneuvering under engine and sails
  • Mooring: bow-to, stern-to, alongside

Navigation

  • Chart reading, buoyage, and recognition of navigation marks
  • Rules of the road, signaling, priority, and crew responsibilities

Meteorology

  • Understanding the Beaufort scale, cloud types, and weather fronts
  • Using weather forecasts, radio messages, and analyzing conditions
  • Factoring weather into route planning

Environmental Awareness

  • Respectful behavior toward nature and fellow sailors
  • Following eco-friendly practices at sea and in harbor
